About me

Dana Ranahan is a registered Physical Therapist, otherwise called physiotherapist, in the province of British Columbia.

Physiotherapy

Body Works Sports Physiotherapy was started by registered physiotherapist, educator and avid cyclist Dana Ranahan in 2009. After a number of years working in larger sports physiotherapy clinics where therapists treated multiple patients at a time, Dana had a vision to create a dedicated physiotherapy clinic that focuses on individual needs with one-on-one dedicated assessment and treatment times.

Focusing on sport and active living, she tailored her practice to help people realize their full potential and achieve their personal best, whether it is the high level athlete, weekend warrior or the mature athlete with a desire to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

Background

Dana has been practicing orthopaedic sports physiotherapy for over 20 years. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy, cum laude, from the University of Western Ontario in 1993. Shortly after this time, in 1994, Dana moved to Vancouver, British Columbia and began working in private practice orthopaedic and sports physiotherapy.

Advanced Manual Therapy Education

Dana has achieved advanced standing in orthopaedic manual therapy and manipulation by completing an advanced manual therapy education system. As a result, in 1999 Dana received a Diploma in Advanced Manual and Manipulative Therapy, and the title of "Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapy" which entitles the designation of FCAMT. But the education didn't stop there!! Since that time, Dana has been assisting and teaching in this advanced manual therapy system through the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Dana also works to mentor younger physiotherapists, ultimately helping to prepare them for their advanced physiotherapy exams and helping to enhance their clinical expertise.

Sports Physiotherapy Experience, including Vancouver 2010 Olympics

Most recently, Dana volunteered her time to work the Haiti national Women's soccer team during the 2012 World Cup held in Vancouver.  What a great experience to work with these driven and hard working athletes.

Dana was also chosen to volunteer her physiotherapy skills with the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. She was a physiotherapist working rinkside at the Short Track Speed Skating Venue held at the Pacific Coliseum. This World Class event was certainly an exciting venue to work at! Dana was fortunate to work with a great medical team consisting of physiotherapists, athletic therapists, ambulance personnel, physicians and orthopaedic surgeons. Dana travelled internationally with the Women’s national soccer team and with their youth development program for four years, including trips to Portugal, Norway, Mexico, the USA, and other destinations. She also helped to organize physiotherapy coverage for the under 20 Women’s World Cup held in Canada in 2002. Dana has also provided physiotherapy coverage for many international events including the World Figure Skating Championships held in Vancouver, as well as numerous other figure skating events. She has also volunteered to share her skills with Canada Cup Fastball tounrnament held in Surrey BC. As well, she has provided local physiotherapy coverage for sports including women’s soccer, women’s fastball, men’s volleyball, and figure skating. Advanced Sports Physiotherapy Designation After many hours of working with various sporting events, Dana pursued her advanced exams in sports physiotherapy. Through this process, she achieved a Diploma in Sports Physiotherapy in 2008.

Intramuscular Stimulation , or IMS

In 2008, Dana also pursued training in intramuscular stimulation, otherwise known as IMS. This is a excellent technique that utilizes acupuncture needles to creates a release in tight or hypertonic muscles. This training has garnered her with the credentials of Certification in Gunn IMS, or CGIMS. She remains a member of iSTOP, the institute for study and treatment of pain.

Personal

On a more personal note, Dana's is an avid cyclist and cross country skiier. She has been a mountain biker for many years, but more recently took up road riding. She picked up a new specialized bike in the summer of 2010. Dana was excited to complete the inaugural Grand Fondo cycling ride from Vancouver to Whistler in September 2010.

On any given weekend, you may find Dana riding her road bike from North Vancouver to Squamish, on riding down one of the North Shore's amazing downhill mountain biking trails, or cross-country skiing at Cypress Mountain. If not found there, you may find her coaching her daughter's U13 and U10 soccer and baseball teams! As you may have guessed, Dana has one other special interest.....her 2 young daughters! That, and relaxing with a nice glass of red wine after all of the work is done!
