“The use of manual therapy as an intervention has garnered intense debate — often mired in a straw man argument that manual therapy is a purely passive intervention.” In an effort to challenge this viewpoint, Daniel I. Rhon, PT, DPT, DSc, and Gail D. Deyle, PT, DPT, DSc have written an article for the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy that explores manual therapy and calls for investigators to explore and describe manual therapy treatment in more detail to better assess its value.

"Manual therapy can have passive components and even be primarily passive in some scenarios. But manual therapy can also form an integral part of highly active treatment strategies."
