About me

Originally from Montreal, Julie graduated from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in San Diego California with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2014 and a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2012. She also holds a Certificate in the Modern Management Of The Older Adult through the Institute of Clinical Excellence. Julie has worked in home-health since 2016 and has 2 years experience working in occupational rehabilitation. She is the founder, owner and operator of Julie Hjelm Physiotherapy where she currently provides physiotherapy services to patients in their private homes as well as in independent and long-term care residences. Julie is also a lecturer, having been the guest speaker at care residences around Victoria and for the Victoria Seniors Business Network. She is a member of the Elder Friendly Community Network, the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia, the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and is licensed through the College of Physical Therapy of British Columbia.

Julie has experience in treating acute and chronic injuries and pain, as well as in providing post-surgical, orthopaedic and neurological rehabilitation. She provides physiotherapy services to adults of all ages however, she has special interest in helping older adults achieving their mobility goals. She excels in falls prevention, functional rehabilitation, mobility, and in strength and conditioning. She provides treatment with goals of increasing safety, independence and overall quality of life. Julie achieves this by listening to patients needs and goals and by providing them with evidence-based education, therapies, as well as equipment prescription, all with a client-centred approach.

In the past, Julie has worked as a yoga and freediving instructor and was a freediving competing athlete and North American champion. She currently enjoys SCUBA diving, backcountry and alpine skiing, hiking, backpacking and overall adventuring in the wilderness with her husband and friends. She also enjoys long conversations over a good meal and a glass of wine.
