Leslie Farrar: Why physio works

Physiotherapy makes a profound impact in the lives of so many children. As therapists, we are often focused on the improvements in physical measures. But so often the greatest benefit comes from somewhere else.
In walks: a teenage boy with hemiplegia. Face drawn, eyes downward glancing, shoulders slumped. It's been a tough day at school.
Slowly he eases into therapy. Within 5 or so minutes, after a couple of light jokes and success with a simple gross motor game, a smile emerges.
30 minutes soon passes: with words like "This rocks", "I can do that" and finally "Give me the challenging one". The face of this young man is completely changed, and with it, his entire perspective and energy level. (Let's do the postural assessment now! :)
Physio works for so many reasons. Becasue we listen to our clients; we get to know them. We give them positive chances for success, again and again.
Encouragement and success. Tapping into the "I can'. The power in those words is greater than any muscle.
We are a lucky profession to have the ability to make such a difference in the lives and perspectives of others. And I love what I do because of it.
