Spirit of the Award

Carol Kennedy has been a Physiotherapist and PABC Member for over 40 years. Carol has been committed to excellence in her practice as evidenced by testimonials from her grateful clients. She has championed evidence-based practice by always utilizing the latest research to guide her treatments/assessments. Carol has been one of our profession’s generational leaders and this award has been created in honour of that. This award will acknowledge those that demonstrate passion in clinical treatment, instructing and mentorship.

Award Intent 

To fund continuing education or research aimed at improving clinical skills and knowledge in the practice and/or teaching of physiotherapy.

Award Criteria

The applicant:

  • has been a member of PABC and is registered to practice in BC.
  • has been active in the profession for at least 5 years.
  • Can illustrate a commitment to the PABC community by educating and mentoring others. 
  • will write a 1-page explanation of how receipt of this award will help attain professional goals.
  • will indicate what education or research sought.
  • will write an article for Directions on the knowledge gained from the funded education.

The Spirit of the Awards

PABC believes that members who make outstanding contributions to the profession should be recognized and honoured by their professional association and their peers. The PABC Public Practice Award provides a way for physiotherapists who are leading the way in clinical care, development of the profession, or research, to be acknowledged and acclaimed by their professional community.

Nomination Procedure

Nominations to include:

  • A completed nomination form.
  • A nomination letter from a current PABC member (maximum 4 pages) which must include the following criteria:
  • Include as much background information about the candidate as possible.
  • Explain in detail why the candidate deserves the award. Please provide detailed examples of the types of activities, programs, etc. in which the nominee has been involved with and provide specific information that supports the candidate’s nomination for the award.
  • Provide any relevant quotes surrounding the nominee and or the nominee’s achievements.
  • At least 2 one-page letters of support from PABC members. Up to 3 additional letters of support from non-physiotherapists may be submitted, for example from patients, clients, or inter-professional team members.
  • Any other relevant documentation (e.g.; copies of published articles, newspaper reports, letters of appreciation, previous citations, or any other evidence of the nominees contribution and excellence).
  • Note: Candidates must be current PABC members; retired members are also eligible.

Nominator Eligibility

  • Nominators must be members of PABC.
  • Candidates must be current or retired members of CPA-PABC.
  • Candidates must have been practicing and been active in the profession for at least 4 years.

PPAC's Public Practice Physio in Focus Award

Spirit of the Awards

PABC members in public practice, including acute care, rehabilitation, community, long-term care and school-age care delivery, work continually to improve the health of British Columbians.  The Public Practice Advisory Committee wants to recognize these individuals and increase the awareness and importance of these diverse areas of physiotherapy practice within the public health care system.

Eligibility

  • PABC Member in good standing.
  • Currently working in a recognized public practice position.
  • Has demonstrated contribution that is the basis for the nomination for at least two years.
  • Has not been a member of the PABC-PPAC for the past year.
  • Nomination received in the current nomination year.

The Peter Huijbregts Memorial Award

Spirit of the Awards

A legacy to Peter Huijbregts’ significant contribution to the physiotherapy profession both locally and internationally through his teaching and research. It recognizes the same passion for knowledge, teaching and research in a PABC member.

Award Intent

 To fund continuing education or research aimed at improving clinical skills and knowledge in the practice and/or teaching of physiotherapy.

Award Criteria

The applicant:

  • has been a member of PABC and is registered to practice in BC.
  • has been active in the profession for at least 10 years.
  • has made a positive contribution to his/her community in their profession as well as in his/her personal life.
  • will write a 1-page explanation of how receipt of this award will help attain professional goals.
  • will indicate what education or research sought.
  • will write an article for Directions on the knowledge gained from the funded education.

The Ruth Byman Memorial Award

The Spirit of the Award

A legacy to Ruth Byman’s relentless pursuit of knowledge, professionalism, and genuine concern for helping others. By recognizing annually the same thirst for knowledge and excellence in a PABC member the spirit of Ruth Byman continues to inspire.

Award Intent

  •  To fund continuing education aimed at improving clinical skills and knowledge in the practice and/or teaching of physiotherapy.
  • Please note that award monies are paid directly from the Vancouver Foundation(link is external) to the award recipient's chosen Educational Institution(s). The award can only be paid to a registered charity, public university or public college. Some examples of such institutions are UBC (including UBC Interprofessional Continuing Education), SFU, and UNBC. This award cannot be used for PABC Continuing Education Courses.
