PABC is pleased to report that our President, Vince Cunanan, attended the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) Congress 2023 in Quebec City. The congress provided an invaluable opportunity to connect with physiotherapy professionals from across the country and engage in discussions on important matters concerning the profession. One of the highlights of the congress was the presence and support of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, who emphasized the significant role of physiotherapy professionals in the Canadian healthcare system.

Ministerial Support for the Profession

During the congress, Minister Jean-Yves Duclos expressed strong support for physiotherapy professionals and recognized their expertise and contributions to the healthcare system; How Pain management and Rehabilitative care improves patient health outcomes and strengthens healthcare through evidence-based models. Minister Duclos also thanked physiotherapy professionals for their dedication to providing quality care.

Discussions and Meetings

PABC President Vince Cunanan, along with CPA President Allison Stene, CPA Chief Executive Officer Krissy Bell, and a national representation of renowned academics, leading researchers, clinicians, and regulators, had the opportunity to meet with Minister Duclos. The meeting focused on exploring how the expertise of physiotherapy professionals can be optimized to enhance the Canadian healthcare system. The discussions aimed to illustrate the key role that physiotherapy professionals can play in health workforce planning and health system modernization.

Commitment to Collaboration

During the meeting, President Stene expressed the commitment of the CPA to collaborate with the federal government in leveraging the expertise of physiotherapy professionals to address the challenges faced by the Canadian healthcare system following the pandemic. Highlighting the multidimensional nature of physiotherapy and its potential to support health system planning. CEO Krissy Bell emphasized the positive economic and health value that physiotherapy brings to the Canadian healthcare system, especially in a strained post-pandemic environment.

Advocacy and Access to Physiotherapy

PABC recognizes the importance of advocacy efforts and enhancing access to physiotherapy across the country. The discussions at the CPA Congress 2023 affirmed the commitment of the CPA to advance the best interests of Canadians through innovative models of evidence-based care. The association aims to leverage this positive step and build momentum in its advocacy initiatives.
