More than 16,000 adults undergo hip or knee arthroplasty each year in BC. With our aging population and osteoarthritis being the most common reason for this elective surgery, we can expect to have as many as 20,000 patients/year needing pre- and post-operative rehabilitation in the next 5 years. Physical therapists play an important role in helping patients prepare for surgery and return to independence in day-to-day activities, mobility, and valued work, leisure and sporting activities after surgery. In this workshop, we will discuss the role of physical therapy along the rehab continuum. Participants will learn how to recognize and address common MSK challenges that impact recovery after TJA using evidence-informed exercise therapy and neuromotor training. This workshop combines lecture, online learning, discussion, patient demonstrations and hands-on practice. All course materials including assessment forms, exercise handouts, and access to an online module are included in the workshop fee.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe current surgical approaches for THA and TKA and their impact on rehabilitation
  • Use key assessment findings to guide rehab interventions
  • Identify and address common gait abnormalities after THA and TKA
  • Recognize and address common MSK challenges that impact recovery
  • Apply principles for progressive exercise therapy and neuromotor training in post-acute phase
  • Select and use recommended patient-reported and performance-based outcome measures for patients along the THA and TKA continuum
  • Recommend community and online resources to promote physical activity and return to sport after THA and TKA
