In Canada, Physiotherapist Assistants (PTAs) work with Physiotherapists to provide care for clients. Under the supervision of the Physiotherapist, the PT and PTA work as a team. PTAs can be involved in aspects of care such as exercises, gait training or applying ice packs/heat. PTAs are not responsible for assessment or designing treatment plans.
There is no licence required to be a PTA. Most employers hire PTA's who have successfully completed an Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program. However, internationally trained PTs may be considered in the hiring process.
